Mahale Mauntains National Park

Mahale Mountains is famous for its large chimpanzee population that is well acclimatized to human contact, is located in western Tanzania on the dramatic shores of Lake Tanganyika. The forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains are overwhelming and the park area extends to the sandy beaches of Lake Tanganyika.

The habitat combines rain forest, grasslands, alpine bamboo and woodland and apart from the chimps, also hosts other species of primate, including black and white colobus, red colobus and red-tailed monkeys. Activities here include tracking endangered chimpanzees and walking in the forest, swimming in the waterfalls and the lake and drifting on a dhow.

Located at Ujiji on the shores of Lake Tanganyika where Stanley is reputed to have met Livingstone and given the famous greeting "Dr. Livingstone I presume".

The Mahale Mountains like Gombe, are one of the last natural home to chimpanzees and  rich in birdlife. The park is a unique ecological zone with lowland forest, miombo, open woodlands, moist and dry savannah grasslands.

Wildlife in the park includes primates, kudus, elands, roans, sable antelopes, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, lions and leopards.

One seasonal luxury tented camp with plans for another. Two small rest houses, large campsite.

the size is about 1,613 sq km (about 1000 sq miles).

When to Visit

dry season starts around the mid of May lasting to the mid November with patches of dry transition time between January and February when rains switch from the short to the longs rains. Long rains start from around the middle of February tapering off by the middle of May. Although the above information is a guideline to the weather pattern, Mahale is accessible at all times of the year.
